Risky Additions to a Low-Carb Diet

The New York Times, 9/13/10

Atkins-style low-carbohydrate diets help people lose weight, but people who simply replace the bread and pasta with calories from animal protein and animal fat may face an increased risk of early death from cancer and heart disease, a new study reports.

...   But death rates varied, depending on the sources of protein and fat used to displace carbohydrates. Low-carb eaters who drew more protein and fat from vegetable sources like beans and nuts were 20 percent less likely to die over the period than people who ate a high-carbohydrate diet.

But low-carb dieters who got most of their protein and fat from animal sources like red and processed meats were 14 percent more likely to die of heart disease and 28 percent more likely to die of cancer, the analysis found.

Reading Food Labels, Combined With Exercise, Can Lead to Weight Loss

Science Daily, 9/9/10

Nutritional science and food marketing has become so sophisticated in recent decades that a trip to the supermarket can require a complete nutritional re-education. The average consumer needs to be on guard against preservatives, added fat, colorings, and calories, false advertising, and sophisticated but misleading labels.

Although guidelines for the information of food labels have gotten a bad rap in recent years, a new study published in the Journal of Consumer Affairs suggests that observing them may lead to weight loss, especially for women entering their middle years. The study was authored by Bidisha Mandal, PhD, an assistant professor at the School of Economic Sciences at Washington State University.

New workout programs show that pools can attract exercisers of all ages

The Washington Post, 9/2/10

Sean Stephens hasn't told his friends he does water aerobics. "I guess until now," the 36-year-old joked last week as we wiggled into the pool at LivingWell, the health club at the Washington Hilton. Only a few weeks ago, the runner and triathlete had never considered doing anything other than laps in the water. But a nagging knee injury persuaded him to take the plunge, and after 45 minutes of tuck jumps, sprints and breaststroke arms, he was ready to make it part of his weekly routine. "I actually got my heart rate up," he says. That probably comes as no surprise to the senior women out there who tend to be water aerobics stalwarts. But they're not the only ones who should be reaping the benefits of buoyancy and water resistance (12 times as great as that of air!), which provide an unparalleled environment for low-impact cardio and strength training.  Read More...
