For National Running Day, support new races

We’re thinking about running on this National Running Day, and I have a suggestion for you – please consider some first-time races this year when planning your calendar.

It takes a huge amount of work to set up a new race, and most of the work is done by volunteers. The second and subsequent years of a race a lot of the groundwork is already done, but that first year….

Here are two inaugural races in race county to consider. I’m personally acquainted with some of those working on creating these races, and I have seen the work they’re doing. Let’s make the races a success!

Two new fall triathlons added at the Pleasant Prairie RecPlex

Two new Indoor/Outdoor Triathlons have been added this fall to the RecPlex’s long-running Turkey Triathlon, held the weekend before Thanksgiving. The new triathlon dates are September 19 and October 17.

The RecPlex, located just across the Wisconsin border off I-94, is the venue of the Pleasant Prairie Triathlons, the Chicagoland Trek Women’s Triathlon, and the Danskin Triathlon. The facility also offers winter, spring and fall indoor triathlons, which allow athletes to continue racing in what is traditionally the “off-season” in the Midwest.

Tri-The-Illini triathlon, April 24

April 24th, 2010 – 8:00AM
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Champaign, Illinois
300m swim, 11 mile bike, 3.1 mile run

The Race: Come see the new recreation facility and race through the beautiful campus. The swim will be held outdoors in the Olympic distance pool, the ride through the flats of central Illinois and the run through the heart of campus!

$40/individual, $45/team
