High dietary fat, cholesterol linked to increased risk of breast cancer

Elevated fat and cholesterol levels found in a typical American-style diet play an important role in the growth and spread of breast cancer, say researchers at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson.

The study, published in the January issue of The American Journal of Pathology, examines the role of fat and cholesterol in breast cancer development using a mouse model. The results show that mice fed a Western diet and predisposed to develop mammary tumors, can develop larger tumors that are faster growing and metastasize more easily, compared to animals eating a control diet.

From dusty punch cards, new insights into link between cholesterol and heart disease

A stack of punch cards from a landmark study published in 1966, and the legwork to track down the study's participants years later, has yielded the longest analysis of the effects of lipoproteins on coronary heart disease

The study, published in a recent issue of the journal Atherosclerosis, tracked almost 1,900 people over a 29-year period, which is nearly three times longer than other studies that examine the link between different sizes of high-density lipoprotein particles and heart disease.

Winter solstice activities in Chicago offer celebration and contemplation

This year the Winter Solstice, which marks the longest night of the year, will occur in the Chicago area on Tuesday, December 21 at 5:38 p.m.

For our ancient ancestors, this point in time created opposing feelings of fear that the cold nights of winter would continue to lengthen and the hope that the light of day would begin its steady movement to overcome the night. For thousands of years, this perpetual cycle of the Earth and Sun has resulted in rituals and celebrations centering on the concept of rebirth.
